Korean Dialects ~Part 1

Do you have a dialect in your area?

It is really interesting that there are various dialects all over Japan.

Some of you may have experienced that a word you thought was standard Japanese is actually a dialect and you could not understand it!

I am sure some of you may have experienced that.

Do you think there is such a dialect in Korea?

Yes...

Yes, there is!

Today, we would like to introduce the dialect of Busan, Korea.

Busan (Busan Metropolitan City) is a metropolitan city located in the Gyeongsangdo region of southeastern South Korea.

It has the second largest population after the capital, Seoul, and is a unique city of the sea.

Busan is famous as a port city with delicious seafood.

Busan is the setting for the Korean dramas "Answer Me 1997" and

and the movie "Let's Meet at the International Market", both of which take place in Busan,

Even if you have never actually been to Busan, I am sure that many of you are familiar with the city.

Well, let me preface this article with a long story,

Today, I would like to introduce the dialect of Busan (Korean: 사투리, read: Saturi)

I will introduce the dialect of Busan (Korean: 사투리) by comparing it with the standard language.

Seoul: 밥 먹었어?　(Seoul: 밥 먹었어?)

Busan: 밥 문나?　 　(read: pan munna?)

Both mean "Did you eat rice?" (read: "Did you eat rice?") in Japanese.

You can see that they are quite different.

So, what about the phrase "Where are you going? (read: "Where are you going?").

Seoul: 어디 가? （Seoul: 어디 가?)
