As we enter the second half of May, the temperature in Tokyo today is said to be as high as 28 degrees Celsius.

It looks like this summer will be hot again.

 

So, I would like to introduce to you a series of articles on what efforts are being made in urban areas.

 

The first one is about the "heat island phenomenon.

 

The heat island phenomenon is triggered by the increase of artificial cover such as concretes on the ground surface in urban areas.

The heat island phenomenon is triggered by an increase in man made surfaces, such as concrete roads, in cities.

 

The high summer temperatures in both daytime and nighttime are causing problems such as heat stroke.

The high summer temperatures in both day and night (sultry nights) cause heatstroke and other problems.

 

Let's review the terminology here.

 

The heat island phenomenon

 

Artificial coverings = man-made surfaces (man-made is also acceptable)

 

Tropical nights = sultry nights

 

Heat stroke = heatstroke

 

Just reading this makes me feel like I need to start preparing my summer bedding!
