What is the origin of the term "grand slam?

 

Tennis player Naomi Osaka won the U.S. Open, her third Grand Slam title.

In tennis, the four major tournaments of Australia, France, Great Britain, and the U.S., or winning all of these tournaments is called a "Grand Slam.
Not only in tennis, the four major tournaments in golf are also called "Grand Slams," and in baseball, a "Grand Slam" means a grand slam home run.

 

So where did the term come from?

 

According to the Oxford American Dictionary, the origin of the term Grand Slam is "early 17th century, as a term in cards, esp. bridge.
In the early 17th century, taking all 13 pairs in a game of cards, especially bridge, was called a "grand slam.

 

Early 17th century, so the term had been in use for four centuries already!
